All positions may not be filled or they may be filled at different times depending on budget, hiring needs, and requirements. These positions are temporary and are expected to last for approximately 6 months. These positions have no promotion potential, if you want to be considered for a higher grade you must apply for the higher grade.
Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work may take place in extremely remote environments and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, and stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day. If selected from this or a similar competitive, seasonal announcement, your appointment may be creditable for consideration under PL-114-47, Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA). The Act allows certain individuals, who have or had time-limited appointments at land management agencies, to compete for any permanent position in the competitive service under ?internal? merit promotion procedures. ### Responsibilities
Materials Handlers receive, store, and package for shipment of firefighting/operational equipment and supplies to the Bureau of Land Management organization, Forest Service, National Park Service and other agencies. Cleans, reconditions, restores and performs minor repairs on fire/operations equipment and tools such as portable pumps, backpack pumps, shovels, Pulaski?s, McLeod?s, rakes, axes and chainsaws. Certain positions may require the operation of light to medium trucks, such as pickup trucks, super trucks from 7,500 GVW to 26,000GVW. Most work requires the regular use of forklifts and motor vehicles and the heavy lifting of objects weighing more than 70 pounds; handling, storage and the proper shipping of hazardous materials. Work is usually done in a warehouse which can be hot, cold, dry, dusty and poorly lighted. The work is dirty, dusty and greasy. Floor surfaces are usually hard, polished concrete. Some work will be performed in the field such as delivering supplies to fire stations or to emergency incidents. Some work requires extended driving time, often on out of the way, unpaved roads and trails.

### Qualifications

WG-04: At this level, materials handlers work under the guidance of a supervisor or higher graded worker who provides general instructions on repetitive assignments and specific guidance including written instructions on new operations or procedures. They follow detailed procedures or instructions to perform warehouse work which involves receiving, storing, and shipping a variety of bin and bulk supplies, material, equipment, and commodities. The work is usually repetitive and involves unloading, stacking, binning, rotating, and marking stock in accordance with standardized operating instructions. They check shipping documents to verify incoming and outgoing shipments and may use automated material identification equipment such as bar code wands, computer terminals, and laser scanners tied into a central computer to select storage locations of items being shipped or received. They use common hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, and pliers as well as hand trucks, hand lifts, pallet jacks, dollies, and electric jack lifts. They may also use automated stock selector equipment such as mechanized platform lifts, automated mini-stackers, and guided material movement vehicles. In some work situations, material handlers at this level operate warehouse tractors, fork lifts, tugs, and general purpose vehicles under close supervision.

The person tentatively selected for this position is subject to completion of a favorable background investigation. Failure to satisfy the preliminary background check will result in cancellation of the tentative job offer. Failure to satisfy the full investigation requirements may be grounds for termination, once you are placed in the position.
A valid driver's license is required for some positions. If you are selected for one of these positions you must be 18 years old and have a current driver's license.
MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT: Employees required to operate a motor vehicle must be at least 18; otherwise, you must be at least 16 at the time you report for work.
A pre-employment physical may be required.
Overnight travel may be required on a regular and recurring basis and employee will be required to obtain and use a government charge card, when travel is necessary.
If you are selected for this position, prior to appointment, you may be subject to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. If drug testing is required for this position, it will be provided at Government direction and expense. Once hired, you may also be subject to random drug testing during employment.
